Following NASA’s need to find a reliable watch for use in its rapidly accelerating space program, the Omega Speedmaster was the only model which met with their highly rigorous testing and exacting standards, thereby receiving certification for manned space missions.
Omega Speedmasters were worn by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin when they walked on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission, on the 21st of July 1969; to commemorate that historic event, Omega introduced an 18k gold limited edition, Ref. 145.022. Beginning in late 1969, and ceasing in 1973, a total of 1,014 pieces were produced. First presented as gifts to associated professionals in the space program and to various honourees, watches numbered 33 to 1000 were later offered for sale to the public and were inscribed "The First Watch Worn on the Moon.”
The watches have not been tested to verify accuracy. Dupuis does not guarantee ongoing operation of movements; it is suggested that timepieces receive routine service.
