Lot 89: An Antique Diamond, Enamel, Wood and Gold Pendant/Brooch, early 19th Century

Of shield-shaped design, centering a circular medallion depicting Napoleon I and Empress Marie Louise in Roman style, and the name 'Andrieu F.', the verso depicting their infant son, and stating 'Napoleon F.J.C. Roi de Rome' and 'XX mars MDCCCXI', over a wood ground, topped by a monogram ‘N’ over a dark blue enamel ground, the outer frame accented by old mine-cut diamonds and gold scrolls, the reverse inscribed 'wood from the coffin and hair of Napoleon the Great', suspending at the bottom a tiny hinged locket composed of two oval rock crystals, with fitted Wartski box

In good condition. The 9 diamonds estimated to weigh 2.00 carats, H-I colour, VS-SI clarity. Width 1 1/4 inches (31 mm). Height with bail 2 1/8 inches (56 mm).

In 1810, Napoleon married his second wife, Marie Louise (1791-1847), the Austrian emperor's daughter. A year later, they welcomed their son, Napoleon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte (1811-1832), who was recognized as Napoleon II and titled the King of Rome.
