In nineteenth century Europe, a dolphin was a rare and mysterious creature, and this fish/dragon is the shape of a dolphin imagined by artists of the time.
The consignor has said that, in 1944, their parents set out to purchase an engagement ring, but on seeing this brooch in the estate department window of a major jeweller, this became the engagement jewel, and was worn with pride for many decades following.
