Lot 41: An Antique Emerald, Split-Pearl, Diamond and Gold Brooch, circa 1870

Hammer Price
$6,500 CAN

Designed as a classical dolphin, featuring emerald-cut and round emeralds and spilt-pearls, with ruby eyes, the fins and tail accented with rose-cut diamonds, in 18k gold

In good overall condition, with one tiny emerald and two split-pearls deficient. Length 2 3/4 inches (68 mm).
In nineteenth century Europe, a dolphin was a rare and mysterious creature, and this fish/dragon is the shape of a dolphin imagined by artists of the time.
The consignor has said that, in 1944, their parents set out to purchase an engagement ring, but on seeing this brooch in the estate department window of a major jeweller, this became the engagement jewel, and was worn with pride for many decades following.
