Henry Birks opened his first jewellery store in Montreal March 1, 1879. During the first half of the 20th century, the firm expanded to other Canadian cities opening a branch store in Ottawa in 1900. Then during the 1920s and ‘30s, Birks ventured into the important Toronto market with the acquisition of Ryrie Bros. and Ellis Bros. For 15 years from 1933 to 1948, the firm was known as Birks-Ellis-Ryrie. Many outstanding jewels were produced during this period. Very fine diamonds and coloured stones were set to the highest standards of craftsmanship ranking the jewels of Birks-Ellis-Ryrie among the top international jewellers of the period.
