Themes on the buttons are representative of what individuals may have sought during the Depression: "M.D." for medical attention, "SALE" for an opportunity to purchase something affordable, "WILL" to inherit something, a hitchhiking thumb to get a lift to somewhere better, military stripes, for joining the army for a steady job, "WPA" with a shovel, for "Works Progress Administration" started in 1935 to create jobs in the USA
