Lot 183: An Antique Black Opal, Ruby and Sapphire Pendant/Brooch, circa 1910

The petite oval form centering a bezel-set oval black opal measuring 18.9 mm x 13.6 mm x 3.6 mm, surrounded by a border alternating channel-set rubies and sapphires, within a deep scalloped openwork gallery, mounted in 18k gold

With brooch fitting and bail, specialised tool to convert from brooch to pendant
Opal: The semi-black opal has a dark grey body colour, with evenly distributed primary red and blue, and secondary green colours, in pinfire pattern. The front of the opal is a low domed cabochon. The solid opal has green and blue pinfire play of colour on the back.
The sapphires and rubies pick up the colours of the opal, and have medium blue and medium pinkish red colours. It is Dupuis' opinion that there is no evidence of heat treatment.
The overall condition is good with some surface crazing on the opal
