Weight: 9.3 grams
Alexandrite of a medium dark tone of very slightly brownish green in daylight, and a medium tone of pink-brown in incandescent light, strong colour change, excellent clarity, excellent cut
Alexandrite with first discovered in 19th Century Russia. The gem was named after the Crown Prince, Alexander, and the famous colour change matched the Russian national colours, red and green. This is a very rare example of the gem, it is highly unusual to find a gem of over ten carats, and even more unusual for one to be as free from inclusions as this. Also the cut is very fine, it is common to see alexandrites cut to retain weight, while this is cut to show the gem to its greatest beauty. It is a gem that would have been individually sourced for a very special client of Birks.
