Lot 325: An Antique Garnet and Gold Pendant and Chain Necklace, Carlo Giuliano, circa 1890

Hammer Price
Unsold

The large square plaque pendant composed of adjoining quatrefoil motifs, each centering a garnet cabochon, decorated with ropetwist and bead work, the reverse embellished by raised floral motifs, mounted in 18k gold, signed C G for Carlo Giuliano; suspending from a long 14k gold chain decorated with garnet stations, by Tiffany & Co., length 32 1/2 inches

Dimensions: pendant 68 x 57 mm
Weight: 95.9 grams
The work of Giuliano is among the most desired and collectible in the world of antique jewels.
The 42 x 42mm square pendant is decorated with alternate 5.50mm and 4.50mm round bright purplish red garnet cabochons. The bezel settings are each supplemented by classic Giuliano gold grains and decorative twist wire frames on quatrefoil forms. The work of Giuliano is famous for attention to detail. The back of each quatrefoil is decorated with a stylized gold daisy. The centre of the back features four applied "CG" signature pallets, rather than one, commonly seen on Giuliano jewels, ensuring a greater symmetry to the design.
The custom made chain, by Tiffany & Co., appears to be contemporary with the pendant, and was likely made with the intention to complement the pendant. The links feature grain and twist wire forms, plus ornament to reflect the designs and decoration of the Giuliano pendant.
